NBI files ethics complaint vs. Kiko Barzaga over alleged false claims on Senate incident - dzrh.com.ph

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has filed an ethics complaint before the House of Representatives against Cavite 4th District Rep. Kiko Barzaga over alleged false and misleading social media posts concerning recent events in the Senate.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag said the complaint stems from a series of online posts by Barzaga in which he accused the agency of allegedly attempting an assassination during a commotion at the Senate while Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa was present.

“He’s somehow accusing that the members of the NBI [ay] pumasok sa Senate to attempt an assination to some of the senators," Matibag told reporters.

The ethics complaint submitted to the House includes screenshots of nine posts made by Barzaga, including a livestream recorded outside the Senate premises.

Matibag said the NBI is seeking Barzaga’s expulsion from Congress, noting that he had previously received a warning from the House following an earlier suspension.

He added that while freedom of expression is guaranteed under the Constitution, it carries limits, particularly when serious allegations are made by a sitting lawmaker.

The agency is also preparing criminal charges against Barzaga to be filed with the Department of Justice for inciting to sedition.

“There’s a warning already sa kanya, baka dapat ‘to removal sa public office already.”

Matibag also dismissed claims that the NBI’s actions were driven by sensitivity to criticism or public reaction.
