All employees will be required to receive paid sick leave, with exceptions of minors under 16, seasonal agriculture workers and small businesses with 10 or fewer employees.
OMAHA, Neb. —
Nebraska workers will be required to have paid sick leave starting Wednesday, as part of the Nebraska Healthy Families and Workplaces Act going into effect.
The law excludes some groups, including those under 16, seasonal agriculture workers, and workers at small businesses with 10 or fewer employees. Employees will begin accruing paid sick time after 80 hours of consecutive employment.
- Employers with 11-19 employees will each earn 40 hours of paid sick time a year
- Employers with 20+ employees will each earn 56 hours of paid sick time in a year
"The preliminary work for paid sick leave started years ago, with some discussions with workers across the state, specifically farm workers, folks in meatpacking plants, folks in restaurants, and childcare workers," Noel Tonniges, campaign organizer with Nebraska Appleseed, said. "Seventy-five percent of the vote speaks volumes to the need and the timeliness of this policy."
The law is expected to give over 100,000 Nebraskans access to paid sick leave who previously were not covered, according to Tonniges. KETV spoke to businesses about the new law.
"The new legislation will not impact us directly because it's something that we've been offering for the last several years," Lindsey Clements, co-founder of Vis Major Brewing in Omaha, said.
