RENO, Nev. (KRNV) — A proposed ballot question could put a minimum wage increase in Nevada constitution if passed by voters.
Question 2 would raise the minimum wage to $12 an hour. Nevada's minimum wage is $10.50 right now and $9.50 for employees who are offered health benefits.
A resolution was passed by state lawmakers during the 2019 election which raises the state's minimum wage 75 cents in summer 2023 and again in 2024 to $12 and $11 for those offered benefits.
The difference between the two, if the ballot question is passed, it would enshrine the increase in the state constitution so future legislation can't repeal it. It would also eliminate the $1 difference for employees offered health benefits and raise the minimum wage to $12 for all workers.
Supporters say it will guarantee the wage can't be lowered based on "the political mood of the day."
One of the arguments against its passage is it's unnecessary since the increase are already in state law.
