New book rehashes false claims about salmon farming - SeaWestNews

Extensive review has identified numerous falsehoods and misrepresentations in new Salmon Wars, book.

American seafood farmers say a new book that purports to take a “deep dive” into salmon farming is actually a shallow narrative full of falsehoods and misrepresentations.

Released by Macmillan Publishers, Salmon Wars, by Douglas Frantz and Catherine Collins, is essentially a rehash of old and largely disproven claims, said the Northwest Aquaculture Alliance (NWAA).

“There is a war being waged against science by activists that would prefer decisions be based on politics, anecdotes and shameless misrepresentations, and the authors deliver on this approach by basing their arguments on false factoids pulled from the news or discredited old studies in place of real facts,” said The National Fisheries Institute in the United States.

Saving Seafood, a group that works with owners, captains, fishermen, seafood processors and brokers across the United States, released an analysis of the claims made by the authors yesterday after extensively reviewing the book.

The analysis identifies 10 fictions spread by Salmon Wars and the real facts behind them.

FICTION 1: Farmed salmon are crammed into cages.

FACT: Salmon occupy less than 4 percent of a typical marine cage. Farmers intentionally keep stocking densities low, so fish have room to swim, grow, and mimic natural schooling patterns.
