TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A new bill under consideration would protect public sector workers from retaliation when they report misconduct to the state ethics commission.
What it does: The bill, SB 92, would prohibit government agencies and independent contractors from taking adverse personnel action against employees who disclose violations to the Florida Commission on Ethics.
Protected disclosures must involve suspected violations of:
The measure allows affected employees or job applicants to:
- file complaints
- pursue administrative remedies
- Sue in civil court, within specified timeframes.
It also amends existing procedures to require the Commission on Ethics to:
Sponsor: The bill was filed by Republican Sen. Don Gaetz. The measure awaits assignment to Senate committees for hearings.
If passed, it would take effect July 1, 2026
The legislative session begins Jan. 13.
