The government has published details of a new growth initiative designed to support innovative, fast-growing businesses and encourage them to scale within the UK.
The measures are targeted primarily at businesses operating in sectors such as technology, life sciences and clean energy. A key theme running through the initiative is improving access to international talent and reducing some of the practical barriers faced by rapidly expanding organisations.
Perhaps the most significant of the reforms is the introduction of a visa fee reimbursement scheme for eligible scale-up businesses.
Under the scheme, qualifying employers in specified sectors will be able to recover up to 5,000 of visa-related costs for each international hire and their dependants, subject to an annual funding cap of 25,000.
A scale-up enterprise is a business that grows by more than 20% per year in either staff numbers or turnover over three consecutive years, starting with at least 10 employees. Eligible applicants must apply through specific immigration routes, including Skilled Worker, Global Talent, or Scale-up Worker, and meet detailed criteria, such as sponsor licence and sector eligibility requirements.
