WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A controversial immigration law takes effect this weekend in Florida.
The law affects undocumented workers across the state.
A non-profit group in our area that works with migrant workers in Florida says these are challenging times, and even though the law has not taken effect yet it's already having an impact.
"I would say all of the migrants are worried and panicked about what to do. I mean certainly tensions are very high," said Mariana Blanco, Guatemalan-Maya Center Asst. Executive Director.
Saturday, July 1 a new law goes into effect in Florida that affects undocumented workers.
The law penalizes workers who use false documentation to gain employment.
It also bars businesses with more than 25 employees from hiring undocumented workers, and makes it against the law to transport undocumented workers from other states into Florida.
"We know that a lot of community members have already been let go because employers are concerned about some of the negative consequences they might face. We're also seeing a lot of families who are, in order to avoid any negative consequences here in the state of Florida have chosen to leave the state," Blanco said.
