New Law Grads Of Color Face Wider Employment Gap Amid Trump’s DEI Crackdown - Above the Law

Ed. note: Welcome to our daily feature, Quote of the Day.

A law degree should open doors, but NALP’s latest report shows that those doors are not equally open to everyone.

— Nikia Gray, executive director of the National Association for Law Placement, in a statement accompanying NALP’s employment data for the class of 2025. More than 94% of white graduates found jobs within 10 months of graduation, compared with less than 91% of graduates of color and 87% of Black graduates, down from nearly 90% in 2024. “Graduates of color remain significantly less likely than White graduates to secure employment — and the gap is wider for jobs as practicing attorneys,” Gray said. “These persistent disparities demand continued attention from everyone in the legal profession to ensure that all graduates have a fair opportunity to enter and succeed in the legal profession.” The gap widened as the graduates entered a job market amid the Trump administration’s campaign against diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Nearly 50 law firms that had previously shared demographic data with NALP declined to do so in 2025, a drop the organization attributed to that campaign.
