WASHINGTON — A new law took effect on Jan. 1, requiring most businesses to disclose pay or salary ranges in their job listings.
Businesses with more than 15 employees fall under this new law. Employers must be upfront with their prospective hires as soon as the job listing is posted instead of waiting for an offer.
The job listing is now required to have a salary range from minimum to highest possible pay.
Blake Matthews, who works in Seattle, said he wishes this happened when he was looking for a job because he said those job listings can be deceiving. "You don’t know what that job entails until you get there, and businesses will ask you to do more than what you’re getting paid for, so I think it’s a benefit that you’re being told that," said Matthews.
The Equal Pay and Opportunities Act came as a way to close the gender gap and provide fair compensation to their workers. This comes as Washington's minimum wage increased from $14.49 an hour to $15.74 for workers 16 and older.
