New laws taking effect in Virginia in 2022 - WCYB

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — With a new year comes new laws. Here's a look at some of the new laws taking effect in the Commonwealth in 2022.

Virginia minimum wage increases from $9.50 per hour to $11 per hour. The minimum wage in Virginia is set to increase each year until it reaches $15 an hour in 2026.

Minimum insurance coverage for vehicles in Virginia is set to increase on Jan. 1. Drivers will now need minimum coverage of $30,000 for injury or death of one person and $60,000 for injury or death of two or more persons. These minimums and the minimum coverage for property damage are set to increase again in 2025.

A Virginia law requiring all municipal elections to be moved from May to November takes effect on Jan. 1, 2022.

The city of Roanoke will begin implementing a $0.05 tax on disposable plastic bags provided at grocery stores, convenience stores and drugstores within city limits.

Beginning Jan. 1, Camping and laying on sidewalks in the city of Roanoke will now be a misdemeanor offense punishable by fine.

The city of Lynchburg will raise the starting salary for all Lynchburg Police Department officers to $50,000, which includes bringing all current officers to that salary, beginning Jan. 5, 2022.
