New state law to remove driver's license requirement for many job applications - KRCR

NORTHSTATE, Calif. — California job seekers are going to see some changes while applying for work in the new year.

Under Senate Bill 1100, employers in the state can no longer require job applicants to have a driver’s license. An exception would be if driving is an essential job function that cannot be swapped out with an alternative form of transportation like using a taxi, walking, or bicycling.

Leaders with O2 Employment Services in Redding told KRCR they think it will impact employers who use driver’s licenses as a way to filter out applicants.

“For the people who maybe don’t use staffing agencies or don’t have a third party teamwork HR doing their job descriptions, it might be a change for them in getting the new requirement and removing the driver’s license requirement unless it is a job essential function,” O2 Employment Services Regional Director Juliaray Corbin-Smith said.

The O2 Employment Services team helps employers in the Northstate with writing their job descriptions. Corbin-Smith said they already avoid adding the driver’s license requirement to the descriptions unless it’s an essential job function.

With the new law, she told us, employers will have to be more focused on the abilities of applicants and how well they meet the duties of the job.

O2 Employment Services will host a Zoom event in the new year going over the labor laws that are changing in 2025, and you can view their social media to stay updated on when the date of the Zoom is announced.
