Dash cam video gives insight into crashing involving Durham DA employee

Dash camera video from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol received by WRAL Investigates on Tuesday afternoon provides insight into an August crash in which a Durham County District Attorney's Office legal assistant, Josiah Wilkerson, was charged.

WRAL Investigates petitioned the court for the video's release under public records law, and a judge granted the motion.

WRAL Investigates reported that Wilkerson was charged with DWI and resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer, related to an Aug. 10 crash on U.S. 70 in Durham, and that Assistant District Attorney Monica Burnette - who oversees traffic matters - came out to the scene and spoke with officers, which some found inappropriate.

In the dash camera video, troopers speak with Wilkerson's mother, and Burnette, on scene.

They tell the women that Wilkerson repeatedly reiterated his place of employment.

"That's the first thing he said: 'What is your name, I work for the DA's office,'" a trooper recounted. "I said, 'Ok sir, I'm not really talking about that right now, I'm investigating a vehicle collision.'"

The troopers told Burnette and Wilkerson's mother that Wilkerson had been physically violent with them, and with those whose car he is accused of hitting.
