HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - Several new employment laws took effect in Virginia on July 1, bringing changes to how employers hire workers and when noncompete agreements can be enforced.
Among these changes are new pay transparency requirements and expanded restrictions on noncompete agreements.
Under the new legislation, employers must include a good-faith wage or salary range in public job postings and internal promotion opportunities. The law also prohibits employers from asking applicants about their salary history or relying on that information when making hiring or compensation decisions.
Attorney Amanda Reiman said the law takes weight off of applicants and allows them to go into the job market with more understanding.
“A lot of times the diligence was left up to the employee. So, if I’m applying to work as a manager at a store, I might pull compensations from other managers of other stores or ask my friends, “Well, what are you making? What is the standard yearly salary? Is it normal to have an hourly wage?”. And you kind of are putting the pieces together. Now, You’re going to know going into it, what you can expect and it’ll also save you time." Said Rieman.
Rieman said applicants should notice the changes immediately when searching for jobs.
“People who are in the job market can now expect to see exactly what the the law calls for, which is pay transparency.”
