Deputy National Party leader Nicola Willis is refusing to distance herself from incorrect claims about the Opposition that were made in a social media clip.
National has been engaged in a barrage of negative ads about Labour in recent weeks, attempting to link the party to every tax idea pushed forward by parties that might form a coalition with Labour - even as Labour leader Chris Hipkins has specifically ruled out those other taxes.
Some clips go further and describe tax ideas from other parties ‒ such as Opportunity’s Land Tax or the Green Party’s capital acquisition tax ‒ as “Labour’s taxes”.

One video from Northland MP Grant McCallum posted by the party features a banner reading “Save NZ Family Farms from Labour’s Taxes” while McCallum lists “a capital gains tax, a land tax, an asset tax, an inheritance tax, and a gift tax” as risks to the family farm. Only the capital gains tax is a Labour policy ‒ and it excludes farms ‒ with Hipkins explicitly ruling out the other tax ideas.
