NIH meets after whistleblower complaint

NIAID to convene: Jeffery Taubenberger, acting director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is set to address the Divisions of AIDS, Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation and Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Thursday. It will be the institute’s first meeting since a former NIAID official filed a whistleblower complaint earlier this month.

The institute will hear remarks from Taubenberger and National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya before meeting with NIAID subcommittees for AIDS research and advisory.

This will be Taubenberger’s second NIAID meeting since becoming acting director in April. The NIAID is the second largest branch in the NIH.

Why it matters: Through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, known as PEPFAR, the U.S. has funded HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment efforts for more than two decades. But PEPFAR, which is credited with saving 25 million lives, has lost funding after President Donald Trump cut most U.S. foreign aid.

Key context: Complaints filed with the Office of Special Counsel earlier this month from Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, former director of the NIAID, and Kathleen Neuzil, former director of the NIH’s Fogarty International Center, allege they were forced on administrative leave for opposing the “hostility towards vaccines” upheld by the Trump administration.
