The Guinean Football Federation (FGF) has firmly dismissed viral rumors claiming Guinea is seeking to overturn the result of its 1976 Africa Cup of Nations match against Morocco.
Spreading rapidly on social media and various outlets, these false narratives suggested Guinea had lodged complaints with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) or Confederation of African Football (CAF) to challenge the historic outcome.
The FGF clarified that no such actions have been taken, emphasizing the match’s final scoreline as undisputed fact.
Played on March 14, 1976, in Addis Ababa and refereed by Zambian official Nyirenda Chayu, the Group Final Stage clash ended in a 1-1 draw.
Guinea struck first through Chérif Souleymane’s goal in the 33rd minute, only for Morocco’s Ahmed Makrouh, affectionately known as “Baba” to equalize dramatically in the 86th minute.
In that year’s tournament, there was no traditional final; the champion emerged from the final group stage, crowning Morocco as winners with Guinea in second place.
The FGF reiterated its commitment to preserving accurate historical records and adhering to sporting regulations, urging an end to baseless speculation.
The federation called on media outlets and African football stakeholders to prioritize verified information, warning against misinterpretations that sow confusion.
