No payday for employee who stayed off work ‘sick’ for eight months - The Post

A woman who took sick leave for eight months, refused to disclose a diagnosis or a return to work date, and posted on Facebook she’d be moving to Australia while still ostensibly employed, has had her claims of unjustified dismissal rejected.

The Employment Relations Authority at Wellington found her employer had acted properly in trying to get to the bottom of the woman’s refusal to return to work after an investigation into an incident on the job, and said none of her claims were made out.

The woman, who The Post has decided not to name, worked as a social worker for Tauranga’s Tautoko Mai Sexual Harm Support Services Trust when, a few days prior to Christmas 2023, she took a client who had travelled from Whakatane from the central bus stop to his appointment at an MSD office in the city.
