During the ICC event in Mumbai, the BCCI announced the schedule for the World Cup 2023. Traditional state associations criticized the allocation of matches, which led to 10 venues being selected for the tournament.

Mohali, along with other centers like Indore, Rajkot, Ranchi, and Nagpur, did not receive matches. Mohali, known for hosting important World Cup matches since 1996, drew strong reactions from the region.

Punjab Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer accused the BCCI of political interference, prompting Rajeev Shukla to respond. Shukla stated that bilateral series matches would be given to Mohali and assured that there was no discrimination.

He cited examples like Virat Kohli’s 100th Test match, which was held in Mohali last year. The current stadium in Mohali did not meet ICC standards, leading to the exclusion from World Cup matches. However, bilateral series matches would still be allocated to Mohali based on a rotational system.
