North Texas doctor sentenced to prison for $54 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare - Fort Worth Star-Telegram

A North Texas doctor has been sentenced to 10 years and one month in federal prison for submitting more than $54 million in false and fraudulent claims to Medicare.

According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice, Daniel Canchola, 54, was ordered to pay over $34 million in restitution for his role in a scheme to defraud Medicare by prescribing durable medical equipment and cancer genetic testing without actually treating the patients.

Canchola received about $30 in exchange for each doctor’s order he signed, which totaled more than $466,000 in kickbacks from August 2018 through April 2019, the news release stated.

The Flower Mound doctor pleaded guilty to the charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in October 2022.

The Medicare beneficiaries for whom Canchola prescribed the equipment and tests were targeted by telemarketing campaigns and at health fairs, federal authorities said.

Assistant Chief Brynn Schiess and Trial Attorney Ethan Womble of the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section prosecuted the case.

Since March 2007, the Health Care Fraud Strike Force Program of the division has charged more than 5,400 defendants who collectively have billed federal health care programs and private insurers more than $27 billion, according to the release.
