Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday strongly rejected reports claiming that the government was planning to impose restrictions or additional taxes on foreign travel. In a rare move, PM Modi personally responded to the report on social media, calling it “totally false” and saying there was “not an iota of truth” in the claims. He also stressed that the government remains focused on improving the ease of living and doing business for citizens.
The controversy began after a media report claimed that the central government was considering imposing a cess, surcharge or additional tax on foreign travel. According to the report, the proposal was allegedly being discussed as part of broader economic measures linked to rising global tensions and fuel costs.
However, PM Modi quickly dismissed the claims through a post on X. Sharing the report, he clarified that the government has no plans to place restrictions on overseas travel. He said such reports were completely inaccurate and assured citizens that the government’s focus remains on making life easier for people, not creating new travel barriers.
The Prime Minister’s direct intervention drew attention because it is uncommon for him to personally fact-check media reports in such a public manner.
