Bengaluru: With incidents of tree collapses leading to injuries and fatalities in the city, BBMP is stepping in with an insurance initiative aimed at providing structured compensation to affected citizens.The civic body is in the process of tying up with an insurance company to offer financial assistance to victims of tree-related incidents. It will make a fixed annual payment to the insurer, which will then process claims under the following categories: Rs 5 lakh for those left with disabilities and Rs 10 lakh for families of the deceased. In case of lengthy hospitalisation, the coverage will be up to Rs 25 lakh."This system will streamline compensation and ensure that genuine victims receive timely support," said a senior BBMP official. However, the official clarified that compensation will only be provided if a police report verifies the cause of the accident. "To date, we received five genuine cases that went through this process," he added.Over the past week alone, BBMP has been flooded with fake petitions demanding compensation for accidents unrelated to tree collapses. In many cases, citizens are falsely blaming fallen trees for accidents or injuries in order to claim relief from the civic body.
