In a statement, NUJP said many journalists were initially cautious in reporting on the campaign, but intensified coverage as deaths increased and official investigations by the Commission on Human Rights and the Department of Justice cited documented killings and police irregularities.

The group accused Kaufman of spreading false claims and attacking journalists who reported on the issue.
