A senior district nurse in County Durham who was unfairly dismissed for being a whistleblower has won more than 460,000 in compensation.
The money was awarded to Linda Fairhall by an employment tribunal on 31 May, following a two-day hearing. The award is compensation for unfair dismissal and loss of earnings.

After 38 years working for North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, Ms Fairhall was dismissed in 2018 shortly after saying she would initiate whistleblowing procedures.
Ms Fairhall was a clinical care coordinator managing a team of around 50 district nurses when additional workload pressures on her team led her to raise concerns over staff and patient safety.
Between December 2015 and October 2016, Ms Fairhall raised 13 concerns. Following a patient death which she believed could have been avoided if her concerns had been acted on, she informed her manager that she would be initiating formal whistleblowing procedures.
On returning from annual leave later that month she was suspended over allegations of gross misconduct relating to her leadership. She was suspended for 18 months and then dismissed in April 2018.
Ms Fairhall successfully challenged her dismissal in 2020 when an employment tribunal ruled she had been unfairly let go.
