Guaranteed access to abortions has become an important issue for employees because the GPU maker has offices in trigger law states such as Texas and Missouri, and some employees have raised the concern in company Slack channels. “At the start of [Roe being struck down], the majority of [Slack] messages were like: ‘We just want leadership to say that we know this affects our employees,” said a current employee at Nvidia. “People in Missouri and Texas are looking for specifics about what kind of help they can expect.”
I suspect their plan will wind up being to do what most normal companies have done which is consider reimbursing travel expenses for any procedure covered by insurance. Even companies that are fairly conservative are coming to the conclusion that this is the sane thing to say, some are just slower to get legal review to clear their response than others.
On an only somewhat related note, one thing I’ve been wondering about lately is whether younger tech workers are ready for what may happen if we hard land into a recession as the Fed tries to curb inflation. For the last decade, their power in the workplace has grown as the supply of tech workers hasn’t kept up with demand because there has been so much money invested in the tech sector over the last decade.
If that dynamic changes, one of the first things I expect management at many of these firms to do is to heavily curb the freewheeling nature of the Slack environment in these companies. They may never...
