NY corrections officer claims $370k after faking injuries: court documents - PIX11

NEW YORK (PIX11) — A New York City corrections officer pleaded guilty after claiming $370,336.79 in benefits by faking injuries while working at Rikers Island, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, announced on Tuesday.

Todd Faustin received a large amount of benefits by falsely claiming that he was injured while on duty at Rikers Island. The defendant claimed that he was involved in incidents with prisoners that required the use of force, according to court documents.

“Todd Faustin fraudulently received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the City of New York by faking injuries after some of the most delicate and dangerous interactions within our criminal justice system—incidents where force is used against an incarcerated person,” said U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton

Under the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board, medical care and cash benefits for city employees, including correction officers, are paid from the New York City Treasury.

Faustin officially resigned from the Department of Corrections on Tuesday after pleading guilty to making false statements related to health care matters, a charge that could carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Faustin is scheduled to be sentenced on July 7.
