LAVEEN VILLAGE, Ariz. — Former President Barack Obama attempted to rally support for Democrats, arguing that voters shouldn't back candidates who embrace false claims about the results of the 2020 election.
"Republicans in the state, they've nominated a whole cast of characters," he told a packed high school gym in Laveen Village, a neighborhood just north of Phoenix where Democrats need to overperform in order to win statewide. They "just assert that Donald Trump won the last election and now they want control of the next election." He also warned that if Democrats don't win, democracy could be threatened, an argument he made Tuesday night in Nevada.
Mr. Obama's remarks echoed some of what President Biden said earlier Wednesday in a speech, in which he warned against voting for candidates who haven’t committed to accepting the midterm results.
Arizona this election cycle is a test case in whether voters will embrace Mr. Trump and his false claims of election fraud. Nearly all major Republican candidates running for statewide office have echoed Mr. Trump's claims that the 2020 election was stolen and all races are seen as highly competitive.
There was no fraud in the 2020 election widespread enough to change the result, according to federal officials. Dozens of lawsuits filed by supporters of Mr. Trump challenging the results failed. A GOP-led audit of the election results in Arizona also confirmed Mr. Biden's win.
