Officials remind employers and teens about Wisconsin’s minor labor laws - WSAW

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development announced more than 1,600 violations of child labor and wage payment laws by a company that operates Burger King restaurants across the state last week. They’re now reminding employers and minors about the rules for working 14 and 15-year-olds.

At a Culver’s location in Wausau, where 30 to 40% of staff are teenagers, owner Liz Moens said the business follows Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development regulations closely.

“It’s a huge priority for us to make sure that we’re not only following the labor laws, but being accommodating to their schedules so that they are able to handle working and going to school at the same time,” Moens said. Adding that they also want to continue working with teens.

“While it does add a level of complication because of the restrictions to their schedule, in combination with them being just busy in general with school and extracurriculars, but we really value being able to offer that first job opportunity. And they’re honestly a really important part of our team period,” said Moens.

State requirements and enforcement

State law requires 14 and 15-year-olds to be scheduled only three hours a day on school days. Culver’s scheduling system enforces this requirement automatically.
