It's official: Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose is running for U.S. Senate.
LaRose announced Monday morning that he'll vie for the chance to take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown in 2024, making him the third Republican to enter the fray. The race is drawing another spirited GOP primary as Republicans try to unseat Brown, who's seeking his fourth term in the Senate.
"When I think about where I came from, I know that my service is far from over," LaRose said in his announcement video. "I'm on a mission to give back to the state that has given me so much."
LaRose took the helm as secretary of state in 2019 after two terms in the Ohio Senate representing the Akron area. He's championed Ohio elections as easy and secure and had little patience for conspiracy theories about the state's 2020 election results. At the same time, LaRose questioned the voting practices of other states and hired investigators for his office to tackle a "crisis of confidence" in elections. Former President Donald Trump endorsed his 2022 reelection bid.
Earlier this year, LaRose sat on a panel at the Conservative Political Action Conference with Republicans who have amplified false claims of election fraud.
