Ohio is one of 21 states where many low-wage workers will enjoy a pay hike come Jan. 1.
Ohio’s minimum wage will rise 50 cents an hour, from $8.80 to $9.30, when the calendar switches to 2022. Workers who receive tips will see an increase in minimum pay from $4.40 per hour to $4.65. The increase was scheduled based on the consumer price index that was voted on in 2006.
The state’s minimum wage is $2.05 more than the federal minimum wage, which has been at $7.25 per hour since 2009. For Ohio businesses with gross receipts of less than $342,000 in 2021, and for those workers under the age of 16, the minimum wage remains $7.25.
The minimus wage in neighboring Kentucky and Indiana will remain at $7.25 in 2022.
Twenty other states are raising their minimum wage rates as part of previously scheduled efforts to adjust for cost-of-living gains or to ratchet up toward goals like $15-an-hour minimum pay. Four states – Oregon, Nevada, Connecticut and Florida – will raise their minimum wages later in the year.
California’s minimum will reach $15 for the first time on Jan. 1 for large employers.
