Thursday marks one year since a violent, pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol.
Five people died, including a police officer. More than a hundred officers were injured. Another four officers died by suicide in the months after the attack.
The rioters broke into Congress to stop the peaceful transfer of power after Joe Biden won the 2020 election.
For months, former President Trump falsely claimed that the election had been stolen. North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, a Republican, spoke out against the violence that day.
But she also voted against certifying the presidential election results in Pennsylvania, and she rose to prominence in large part because she backed and echoed Trump’s baseless election claims.
Freelance journalist Zach Hirsch – formerly NCPR’s Plattsburgh correspondent – spoke with David Sommerstein about Stefanik’s statements on January 6, 2021, and the role she’s played in amplifying Trump’s false claims about the election.
DAVID SOMMERSTEIN: Let’s start with the basics – where was Congresswoman Elise Stefanik on January 6, 2021?
ZACH HIRSCH: Congresswoman Stefanik was at the Capitol. She was on the House floor when it was evacuated. Stefanik said she and her staff were safe. On Twitter that day, she condemned the violence as “unacceptable” and “anti-American.” And speaking on the phone with WWNY, she called on Trump to do the same.
