OpenAI whistleblower Suchir Balaji’s parents have rejected the official ruling of suicide in their son’s death, claiming he was shot twice in the head and that critical forensic evidence was overlooked. The 28-year-old was found dead in his San Francisco apartment on November 26, 2024, just a month after he publicly raised concerns about OpenAI’s methods of training ChatGPT.

While authorities initially ruled the death a suicide caused by a single gunshot wound, Balaji’s family insists that the investigation missed vital details, casting doubt on the official narrative.

Suchir Balaji’s parents claimed they saw two gunshot wounds on their son’s body, neither of which appeared instantly fatal. A second autopsy by Dr. Daniel Cousin supported their concerns, revealing that an additional bullet had entered through Balaji’s mouth and became lodged at the base of his skull. The report noted the bullet was likely stopped by bone and may have passed through the air passage without causing significant internal damage.

It read, “This bone stopped it and it did not cause any damage likely, perhaps it traveled through the air passage of the mouth to the back of the throat without causing problems."
