A final autopsy report released on Friday concluded that 26-year-old OpenAI whistleblower Suchir Balaji, died by suicide inside his San Francisco apartment. The San Francisco County Medical Examiner confirmed that Balaji passed away on November 26, 2024, from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.
San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott, in a letter to the attorneys representing Balaji’s parents, stated that both the medical examiner’s report and the police investigation found insufficient evidence to classify the death as a homicide.
“We realise that this information is difficult to receive, and we extend our sincere condolences to the Balaji family,” Scott and David Serrano Sewell, the executive director of the medical examiner’s office, wrote.

Despite the official findings, Balaji’s parents remain skeptical. His mother Poornima Ramarao cited inconsistencies in the investigation. She took to X and accused authorities of failing to retrieve CCTV footage from the apartment building. “They have never retrieved CCTV footage from leasing office. We need report from police. We are only requesting transparent investigation,” Poornima posted on X tagging Elon Musk, Kash Patel and Mario Nawfal.
