Suchir Balaji Death Case: At the time, Suchir Balaji’s death was ruled a suicide from a single gunshot wound but his family said that key forensic details were ignored during the investigation into the case.

OpenAI whistleblower Suchir Balaji’s parents denied their son’s death to be a case of suicide as they claimed that the 28-year-old was shot twice in the head and the official autopsy missed critical evidence. Suchir Balaji was found dead in his San Francisco apartment on November 26, 2024, a month after publicly questioning OpenAI’s methods of training ChatGPT.

At the time, Suchir Balaji’s death was ruled a suicide from a single gunshot wound but his family said that key forensic details were ignored during the investigation into the case.

Suchir Balaji’s parents said they personally saw signs of two gunshot wounds on their son’s body and neither of which appeared immediately fatal. A second autopsy, conducted by Dr. Daniel Cousin, concluded that another bullet had entered through Suchir Balaji’s mouth and was lodged at the base of his skull.

The second autopsy noted, “This bone stopped it and it did not cause any damage likely, perhaps it traveled through the air passage of the mouth to the back of the throat without causing problems."
