As this congressional session comes to a close, your representatives can choose to hang low until the holiday break. They can stay out of the heat and out of the headlines. But what if they did just the opposite? What if instead they could make a move that would crown them a hero in the eyes of the voiceless and victimized?
Congresswomen Rosa DeLauro has this opportunity. On Dec. 7, the United States Senate unanimously passed the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Whistleblower Improvement Act . This act, cosponsored by Sens. Chuck Grassley, Raphael Warnock and Elizabeth Warren, will amend the money laundering laws to include powerful and highly effective provisions modeled directly on the Dodd-Frank Act . Furthermore, for the first time, whistleblowers who report violations of sanctions laws will be able to report those crimes anonymously and confidentially. They will also have the same protections as other whistleblowers under Dodd-Frank.
Why did the Senate unanimously approve these reforms in the crowded congressional lame duck session? The answer is simple: Russia. This law will empower whistleblowers to provide U.S. law enforcement with evidence of Russian money laundering and sanctions-busting. Given the war in Ukraine, and the billions of dollars Russian oligarchs have laundered into the West, the need to immediately pass this law is overwhelming.
