For years, Republicans have peddled false claims of voter fraud as justification for laws that make it harder to vote. But since voter suppression alone hasn’t been adequate to keep Republicans from losing, the party’s anti-democracy strategy has expanded to attempts to give them the power to overturn election outcomes, including here in Connecticut.
Following the 2020 presidential election, Republicans everywhere joined Trump’s “Stop the Steal” effort that led to the unprecedented Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol to prevent the certification of Joe Biden as president-elect.
As it turns out, the ones actually trying to steal the election were Republicans. Reporting by Politico, CNN and MSNBC is revealing a coordinated effort following the 2020 presidential election by local Republican Party members in battleground states to disenfranchise millions of voters. In Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, New Mexico, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, phony Republican electors signed fraudulent certificates of ascertainment, casting votes for Donald Trump in states all won by Joe Biden.
This wasn’t some promotional stunt. In Georgia, Michigan and Nevada, videos document the forgeries and impersonation of electors.
