[OPINION] Open the ICI hearings to the public, institute a whistleblower program - Rappler

The Independent Commission for Infrastructure must establish credibility: it must be fully public and transparent, with no 'sacred cows' spared

The public’s outrage is very real: people are angry, frustrated, and feeling betrayed — especially by the politicians and government officials who were sworn to bring them out of harm’s way but were precisely the ones setting them in peril. The government is fortunate that the national psyche has remained generally calm and responsibly mature.

Thanks to the non-violence consciousness the people have collectively embraced, inspired by the “EDSA People Power” which made possible the return of democracy through a bloodless revolution. It was an event the world envied and tried to emulate all these years but without comparative success.

But this should not lull the government. This lack of appetite by the people for violence at the moment is not a guarantee that it may not experience the same anarchic outburst and destruction that hit Indonesia and Nepal lately. We know too well that this could readily happen as it did during the dark desperate times of our not-so-distant past.

At the Monday Circle forum held this week, a scary narrative also loomed large wherein the situation may morph to stunt the economy, and if not properly handled, may turn into an ugly scramble for power that could undermine political stability.
