I am an executive board member of the University of San Diego School of Law’s Name and Gender-Marker Change Clinic. The clinic helps transgender and gender-nonconforming Californians update their name and/or gender marker to reflect their true identities. Through my work with the clinic, I am privileged to witness the profound impact that our organization has on the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals in our community. Though the process may appear straightforward on the surface, it is far more complex than it seems. To begin, those seeking a name and gender marker change must complete many court forms, the type of which depends on a multitude of factors (such as if the person is changing their name or gender marker or both, if the person is over 18, and if not, if both parents affirm, etc.). Once those forms are filled out, that person then needs to file them with the state Superior Court. After waiting...
