Amid the holiday rush that consumes every See’s Candies store in the heart of December, piles of cardboard and landfill garbage towered over me in the Otay Ranch Town Center’s shared dumpsters. The small See’s I work at disposes of dozens of boxes an hour during the holiday season, but I quickly discovered that no one planned on taking out the garbage as part of a local strike. It came to a point where brown squares covered the entire floor of the garbage disposal areas and heaps of trash bags blocked the back doors of restaurants and stores. Thankfully, Republic Services has since reached a settlement with the strikers, putting an end to this sanitation crisis. However, I believe this is far from the end of Californians being dissatisfied with their labor, working conditions and general cost of living.
