Opposition Accuses Premier of Making False Claims on Hiring Criteria Set Out in MOU - VOCM

The energy critic says Premier Tony Wakeham is making false claims regarding the hiring criteria spelled out in the MOU with Quebec on hydro development in Labrador.

Premier Wakeham has said that the province did not fight for jobs for people from Newfoundland and Labrador but Conception Bay East-Bell Island MHA Fred Hutton says that is categorically false.

It’s still unclear whether the PC government will proceed with the MOU. Premier Wakeham has said that there would first be a review of the tentative agreement, then a referendum.

MHA Hutton says the hiring regimen for Gull Island ensures that local preference comes first.

Hutton says it’s also made clear in the MOU that the expansion of Churchill Falls will have the same jobs guideline: Innu first, then people from Labrador, then from the island, followed by people from the rest of Canada.
