Over 12,500 ex gratia claims up for scrutiny - Times of India

Pune: Members of a central team, dispatched to the state to verify Covid ex gratia claims, are set to scrutinise over 12,500 applications.
Besides Pune, the team sent to Maharashtra will also assess claims from Satara, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Amravati, Buldhana, Solapur, Ratnagiri, Nagpur, and Wardha.
Central teams have been asked to verify 5% of all claims in four states — Maharashtra, Kerala, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh — where the gap is wide between number of claims and recorded Covid-19 deaths.
A member of the team visiting Maharashtra said the verification process will take time as the Supreme Court has set detailed guidelines. The state has received 2.52 lakh ex gratia applications which means the team will have to verify more than 12,500 claims.
Officials in the state districts have been asked to provide details of medical evidence and Form 4, which was considered before making any decision in each of the cases, one district official said.
The central teams will go on to examine details of cases that were approved for compensation, or rejected, by district authorities.
The Supreme Court had on March 24 permitted the Centre to conduct an inquiry into fake claims for ex gratia compensation meant for family members of those who have lost their lives due to Covid saying, “nobody can be permitted to avail the compensation by making a false claim or submitting the false certificate”.
