The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has identified and debunked over 40 instances of fake news propagated by Pakistan-based sources amid escalating tensions with India following Operation Sindoor. On May 10, 2025, the PIB swiftly addressed a series of misleading social media posts, including false claims of a Pakistani cyberattack on India’s electricity grid and a fabricated drone strike on the Nankana Sahib Gurdwara, as part of a broader wave of misinformation targeting the public.
Wave of Misinformation Post-Operation Sindoor
The surge in fake news followed India’s precision airstrikes on terrorist camps across the border under Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22, 2025, terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. These strikes, aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure, triggered a flood of deceptive posts from Pakistani social media accounts intended to incite unrest and confusion in India.
Among the false narratives, the PIB’s Fact Check Unit tackled claims circulating between late Wednesday and early Thursday, alleging that a Pakistani cyberattack had crippled 70 per cent of India’s electricity grid.
