As two multinationals announce 4-day in-office policies
Proving the adage that all good things must come to an end, some Boston law firms are drawing back from remote work policies adopted by necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic and extended as a benefit that had become valued by the attorneys they employ.
Like other law firms, Crowe & Harris went 100 percent remote during the pandemic. But the policy now is for attorneys to be in the office four days a week with the option to work one day from home. Michael J. Harris, managing partner of the Boston personal injury firm, says the in-office requirement promotes communication.

“People can say that there are apps and programs that allow you to communicate and send messages to people when everybody’s remote,” Harris says. “But it doesn’t work as well as just walking into someone’s office or walking down the hallway.”
Harris claims there’s a noticeable difference dealing with law firms that have gone “100 percent remote.”
“There are things that have fallen through the cracks, there are things that are not moving as efficiently as they should. The cooperation isn’t there,” he says. “Can it work? Yes. But is it ideal? No.”
