Pence likely to testify before Jan. 6 committee, member says - New York Daily News

Former Vice President Mike Pence is expected to testify before the special House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 siege of the U.S. Capitol, a panel member said Sunday.

The ex-veep — whom former President Donald Trump publicly lambasted the day of the riot — could shed light on what happened behind the scenes, said Rep. Jamie Laskin, a Maryland Democrat.

“Pence was the target of Donald Trump’s wrath and fury and effort to overthrow the election on Jan. 6,” Raskin said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “The whole idea was to get Pence to step outside his constitutional role, and then to declare unilateral lawless powers to reject Electoral College votes from the states.

“So I think he has a lot of relevant evidence, and I would hope he would come forward and testify about what happened.”

After losing the 2020 election to President Biden, Trump pursued numerous strategies to act on his false claims that victory had been stolen from him. He pressured Pence to throw out electoral votes when Congress met to certify the election results.

The third public hearing of the Jan. 6 committee detailed those efforts and featured video testimony from Pence’s top White House lawyer, Greg Jacob.

“No vice president had ever tried to reject Electoral College votes and Mike Pence and his team ultimately said it was ridiculous,” Raskin noted Sunday.

He added that he expects Pence to come forward voluntarily.
