Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro: State department will work to ensure fair, secure 2024 election - WGAL Susquehanna Valley Pa.

HARRISBURG, Pa. —

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro discussed a variety of topics during a recent one-on-one interview with News 8, including the upcoming 2024 election.

The governor said he understands the importance of ensuring voters' voices are heard in the upcoming 2024 presidential and U.S. Senate elections after his experience fighting off false claims of election fraud in 2020 during his time as attorney general.

"The will of the people was protected, and I was proud to be able to go to court over 40 times and defeat the former president and his enablers each and every time in order to protect the will of the people," he said.

As governor, Shapiro said his Department of State will work to ensure a free, fair, safe and secure election.

"And I, of course, will respect the will of the people, whoever they choose, for whatever office," he said. "I think it's important to note that when people go to the polls, sometimes we elect Republicans. Sometimes we elect Democrats. Sometimes we elect Independents or third-party candidates. It's important that the will of the people always be protected, and that's job No. 1 as governor and for my secretary of state."

But as a leading Democrat, Shapiro said he intends to work hard to make sure U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pennsylvania) is re-elected amid tight margins that have left Congress' upper chamber with a slight Democratic advantage.
