Lee Soo-jung, People Power Party Suwon Jeong Party Cooperation Committee Chairperson (Kyunggi University professor), has been referred to trial on charges of posting on her social media ahead of the last presidential election that “President Lee Jae-myung (then Democratic Party of Korea presidential candidate) and his two sons received military exemptions.”
According to legal circles on the 27th, the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office’s Public Investigation Division (headed by Kim Hyun-woo) indicted Lee, 49, on the 25th without detention on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act (publication of false information) and the Information and Communications Network Act (defamation).
Lee posted on her Facebook account on May 28th of last year, ahead of the 21st presidential election, “The candidate and his two sons all received military exemptions,” which led to a complaint from the Democratic Party.
Contrary to the post’s content, both of President Lee’s sons fulfilled their military service obligations.
At the time, Lee had deleted the post shortly after sharing it and stated, “I shared information circulating online for about 10 seconds, confirmed it was incorrect, and immediately deleted it. I beg for forgiveness, West Sea (Yellow Sea).”
On the same day, Lee wrote on her Facebook, “As someone who has lived as a researcher my entire life, I can only feel apologetic to the people who do their best in their livelihoods, regardless of the circumstances.” She...
