People Power Party Representative Kim Jae-sub, who raised suspicions regarding former Seoul mayoral candidate Chong Won-o’s overseas trip to Cancún, Mexico, during his tenure as Seongdong District Mayor, appeared at the police station as a suspect on the 6th. This marks the first investigation of an opposition lawmaker since the abolition of the prosecution service.
The Metropolitan Police Agency’s Public Crime Investigation Unit began questioning Kim on the morning of the same day over allegations of publicizing false information and defaming a candidate under the Public Official Election Act.
In March, Kim held a press conference at the National Assembly, claiming that during Chong’s tenure as Seongdong District Mayor, a public official identified as Mr. Lim accompanied him on the Cancún trip, and that Lim’s gender was incorrectly listed as male in the official travel approval document. Kim also alleged that Lim received preferential treatment during his rehiring process after the trip. Chong’s camp has consistently refuted these claims, stating that Lim was responsible for overseas affairs, Cancún was a transit point, and the gender error was a simple administrative mistake.
