PEORIA, AZ (AZFamily) — A man from Peoria was indicted last week for allegedly fraudulently billing the state’s Medicaid program over $33 million in a year to buy property and a luxury vehicle.
A federal grand jury in Phoenix indicted 48-year-old Maurice Marcell Williams on Sept. 8 for health care fraud and money laundering, U.S. Attorney Timothy Courchaine announced Tuesday.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona, Williams allegedly owned and operated Thinking and Learning Together 2, LLC (TLT). The business reported itself to be a behavioral treatment provider.
The indictment alleges Williams defrauded Arizona’s Medicaid program, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), by failing to disclose his ownership of TLT and his prior criminal conviction in his initial application. Williams allegedly billed AHCCCS for services that never happened.
The attorney’s office said Williams targeted people covered under the American Indian Health Care Program (AIHP) fee-for-service plan that is open to Native Americans.
The indictment alleges that between May 2022 and May 2023, Williams billed the program more than $33 million, and AHCCCS paid him about $19.7 million based on his false claims.
Williams is accused of using the money to buy two residential properties and a Rolls- Royce Cullinan SUV.
If convicted, Williams could face up to 10 years in prison for each of the 11 counts.
