KUALA LUMPUR: The number of company executives and doctors facing court action over false Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) claims highlights the growing complexity of fraud cases handled by the government agency.
While cases have declined overall, Perkeso is seeing a worrying trend involving suspicious claims linked to government assistance programmes.
These initiatives include PenjanaKerjaya, the Wage Subsidy Programme and Daya Kerjaya.
"Those involved are continually adapting their methods and looking for new ways to circumvent controls," said Perkeso group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed.
"In some cases, these activities appear to be carried out systematically by people or groups who treat fraud as a source of income," he told the New Straits Times.
"Based on the cases detected over the past three years, Perkeso's main concern is not simply the number of suspicious claims, but their increasing complexity and potential financial impact."
HOW FRAUD IS CARRIED OUT
Azman said some employers and company owners set up shell companies, registered people who were not actually employed, or "ghost workers", and falsified monthly payroll records to obtain government hiring grants.
"In other cases, a small number of corrupt doctors from public or private clinics colluded with syndicates to falsify clinical charts, backdate medical documents or exaggerate disabilities.
