Personal injury firm fabricated cases, NYC alleges in suit - ABA Journal
New York City filed a lawsuit in federal court late Sunday alleging that a personal injury law firm used false accident narratives and litigation to pursue compensation from the city.
The suit filed in the U.S. Southern District of New York against Ryan Asher, Roberta Asher and Asher & Associates was brought under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, as well as the New York City False Claims Act and the New York State False Claims Act.
The city alleges in the complaint that the defendants repeatedly attributed injuries to defective municipal roadways, despite other records indicating that car accidents, assaults or other events were to blame, according to a story by Law.com.
The city claims that the firm could have committed “hundreds if not thousands” of racketeering acts over the past 10 years. Law.com said efforts to get comment from Ryan Asher and Roberta Asher went unanswered.
