Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has repeatedly criticised the International Criminal Court (ICC), but her claim that the tribunal "has no other case" except that of her father, Rodrigo Duterte, is false. While experts say the former leader's trial is a landmark case for the ICC, a review of the court's archives and official reports shows numerous other suits in various stages of litigation.
"The ICC has no other case except for the case of president Rodrigo Duterte," the vice president said during a rally in front of the ICC building in The Hague on July 29, 2026.
Her father has become the "poster boy" of the ICC, she asserted during the 37-minute speech streamed live by one of her supporters on Facebook.
"The one and only," she said, adding the court is targeting an Asian leader as it "cannot go after" leaders of other races.
Rodrigo Duterte was arrested and swiftly handed over to the ICC in March 2025 to face crimes against humanity charges over his "war on drugs" that rights groups say killed thousands.
An arrest warrant was also issued against the enforcer of the brutal crackdown, Philippine senator and former police chief Ronald Dela Rosa, who remains in hiding ( archived link)
In the same speech, Sara Duterte criticised her ex-ally President Ferdinand Marcos, saying he "delivered" her father to the ICC.
